My process
This sketch was done in a series of pastel studies attempting to capture the changing colours of the Costa Rican sunset over the pacific. I did this in preparation for larger oil paintings completed back home in the studio. These studies are hugely important for me because principally, I am a plein air painter who loves the immediacy of working directly from my subject.
My paintings seek to capture the richness of the world I experience, and convey that to the viewer in a realistic and often emotional manner. This process also transfers into my commissions of pets, since my aim here is also to capture emotion and the pet's personality.
