'Apertures'

Art A-Level Exam Sketchbook

For my Art A-Level exam project, I printed a sketchbook entitled 'Apertures', which accompanied my painting 'Viking returns to camp' that I did in the 15-hour exam. I researched a range of visual artists that engaged with fantasy themes, starting with a digital artist called 'Mr Werewolf' and also studying the Romantics. This painting was the outcome of considerable experimentation with technique and narrative, something I hadn't focused on before. I used reference imagery from a trip to Iceland and from the Jorvik Vikingfest in York to create the post-battle scene, and worked at a large scale for maximum impact. For this I was awarded 100% UMS and received a Gold Award at the end of year exhibition.
